Прямую речь в косвенную)

Исходный:
"Has your sister found a job?" - Boylan asked.
"I don't know", Rudolph said, keeping all the information to himdelf. "I haven't heard from her recently".
"Do you think she'll be successful?" Boylan asked. "Does she have talent?"
"I think so. She has something", answered Rudolph.

Что получилось у меня:
Boylan asked if his sister had found a job.
Rudolph said that he didn't know(n?) and was keeping all the information to himself that he hadn't heard from her recently. (Тут я сомневаюсь с "keeping ... ", где его именно употребить надо.)
Boylan asked if he thought that she would be successful and she had talent.
Rudolph answered that he thought so and she had something.

Старался делать по правилам, но всё-таки.) Если что где неправильно, просьба объяснить.)

know. если глагол в прошедшем простом времени и есть уже вспомогательный глагол, который "забирает" на себя время, глагол стоит в bare inf.

Rudolph said that he didn't know(n?) and was keeping all the information to himself that he hadn't heard from her recently.
я бы так написала:
Keeping all information to himself, Rudolph said that he didn't know and hadn't heard from her recently.
нельзя переделываять деепричастный оборот, стоящий НЕ в прямой речи в самостоятельное предложение.

в третьем предложении либо ставьте IF she had talent или she убирайте, иначе получается не вопрос а утверждение.

А вот с деепричастным тут же тогда по смысле не подойдёт?оО
В исходном, я так понимаю, это переводится, как "он продолжил для себя"... Не так, конечно, но смысл тот.
А если переделать так, как вы сказали, то получится: "Продолжая для себя, Рудольф сказал..." А как он мог продолжить, если он даже не начал?

Just my 'two cent's:
You'd better omit 'that' whenever it's possible and try not to overuse 'ask', 'say' or 'answer'.

The following might be considered as a variant:

Boylan asked Rudolph if his sister had found a job.
Intended (or: willing) to keep all the information to himself, Rudolph replied he didn't know and added that he hadn't heard from her recently.
Boylan inquired if he thought that she would be successful and whether she really had talent.
Rudolph agreed that she had something.

откуда вы взяли перевод оборота "keeping all the information to himself" "продолжил для себя". это не так. скорее это "не распространяя информацию, которой он владеет".

смысл НЕ может меняться, если вы НЕ меняете деепричастный оборот на отдельное предложение О_О. то что вы передвините его на другое место это не страшно - в конце концов, так обычно и делают, переводя прямую речь с "авторством и пр" в интерпозиции, в косвенную.

Intended (or: willing) to keep all the information to himself

the following expressions shall not be added here, or anywhere with the same kinda' transformations. We don't know, wether Rudolph really intended or wanted to keep the information. If you think more carefully, you might consider that he 'had to keep all the information...', 'was made to...' 'tried keeping' 'decided to...' etc etc etc. You see, adding your own 'opinion' to those phrases (yes, that does include adding verbs with specific emotional tint in non-coloured-clause-parts) might make the transformed sentence or the general idea, the narrator was trying to express, indistinct or unclear.
I hate sounding like a drag, but here's the deal - unneeded personal opinion and emotions is the most common problem of translations (even though we're not talking about one here).

You are quite right about 'emotions' especially considering translation issues.

However, I have always been bored to death with such dull grammar drills without any clear context and I can hardly estimate the value of them.

Still, I failed to find anything against 'intended', as even if a person is made to do anth. it's due to his choice or will to submit.

Nevertheless, I wouldn't dare say a word to oppose the task of the ex. since I am not a teacher in this case.

I used to think the same a few years ago, although, lol my uncle Bill would tell me this: "Try to imagine he's standing right there with a gunman behind. A fear of getting a bullet in your head is hardly an 'intention'" - after hearing that once and laughing for about an hour after, I - ever since - keep in mind: "Don't try to find any way a coloured-in word would fit, there is always a bunch of reasons why you should throw it away, e.g./mostly, for more certainty."

Oh, and one more rule, that works in Russia (and which I, frankly, hate most of all), don't you ever try to smart-ass in front of russian English teachers. They will always find a way to tear you down even if you are completely-never-been-more-sure-100% right. Never do more than you've been asked to do. If it is to transform - transform. They won't ever appreciate your used-in or spent-off imagination - they just don't care about that as long as their book doesn't say: "Imagine" or "Make up".

After my american uncle and yyyyeeeeeaaaaarrrrssss spent in Ohio I've had so many damn arguements with teacher here in Russia, probably, sometimes, they just failed to comprehend, but it doesn't matter. They never care even if you're right. That's why I especially accentuate excluding aaaaall of the emotional and 'opinion-al' words out of the exercise.

P.S. And yes, the native-speakers' 'But they would never say so' or 'It sounds much better' excuses, which are so very sweet, never work here.) (seen it)

Guess we both prefer the same 'studying-type' but we're not to give people wrong or unclear answers here, that's why I decided it might have been important to point out the difference between yours and mine, so that the guy would choose himself, what fits more (wether the teacher is evil or not lol).
