This church was built in the time of Jaropolk, in 1135 to be precise. It was mentioned in “The Song of Igor's Campaign”. There are few hypotheses about derivation of the name of this church. The name «Pirogoscha» consists of two parts – «piro» and «goscha». The word «goscha» comes from the word «gost’» – a merchant, while the meaning of the word «piro» is connected with the Greek translation of the word «wheat». This makes it possible to draw a conclusion that this church was built by the merchants that sold bread. The Pirogoscha Church of the Virgin ruins was destroyed three times and burnt four times. Since other churches in Kiev were rebuilt in the 17th century in the baroque style, this is the only one that preserves the original Byzantine look.
